MUSICElementaryPrimary grade music emphasizes ability to sing in
tune, to recognize and internalize beat, rhythm and melody, and to listen
with appreciation. Holidays and special units in other curricular areas
are given attention. Public performance is an extension of classroom
instruction. Musical literacy and correct singing techniques are
emphasized. Intermediate grade music continues to use the voice as the student's natural instrument. Rhythm, melody, and harmony are stressed. Use of the soprano recorder, Orff instruments and a unit on the orchestra expand the program. Public performance is continued. Students with special music abilities are identified and provided additional opportunities when appropriate. Preparation, presentation, and practice of concepts are the primary teaching techniques.
